About

Statue of São Vicente

Statue of São Vicente

The Miradouro das Portas do Sol is probably the most photographed view of the city and is visited by the majority of tourists to Lisbon. The viewpoint is easily accessed and on the #12 and #28 tram routes to the Alfama and passes the Sé. The terrace is a great location to sit and relax on the way to, or returning from, the castle further up the hill. There are several kiosks, cafes and restaurants at your disposal. As you look over Lisbon's oldest district look out for the while marbled domes and bell towers of Santo Estêvão, São Miguel and São Vicente de Fora churches nestled within the hodgepodge of terracotta-roofed houses.

A statue of São Vicente, the patron saint of Lisbon, stands sentinel on the terrace holding a boat with two ravens, the symbol of Lisbon. The magnificence of the view is accentuated at dusk when the Alfama is bathed in soft warm hues. A possible source of the viewpoints name "doors of the sun".
