Teatro Nacional de São Carlos

This attractive Italian-styled 18th-century neoclassical building attained National Monument status in 1928. The theatre is home to the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa) and was founded in 1993. It is also home to the Choir of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, the country’s only professional choir formed in 1943. The continuous programme of events is held in three different halls; Teatro Nacional de São Carlos shows ballet, operas and concerts in the Main Hall, smaller and more intimate performances in the Salão Nobre (Grand Hall) and various other events and social gatherings in the Foyer. At the end of each season, it also organises the São Carlos Square (Festival ao Largo), which brings scholarly music outdoors to audiences of different generations.
